The Fondazione Ernesto Illy ETS commemorated the 100th anniversary of Ernesto Illy’s birth with a conference that looked not backward, but forward—just as the visionary entrepreneur and scientist himself would have wished. Titled “The Values of Ernesto Illy: Reflections 100 Years After His Birth,” the event brought together experts, scholars, and friends in Trieste to reflect on the enduring legacy of a man who reshaped the coffee industry through innovation, ethics, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Even the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, honored the occasion with a message underscoring the inseparable link between business and societal responsibility. He praised Ernesto Illy’s foresight in championing environmental sustainability and social equity, particularly in coffee-producing communities—a testament to a philosophy that remains profoundly relevant today.

Anna Illy, President of the Fondazione Ernesto Illy ETS, captured the essence of her father’s life’s work: “Ernesto Illy dedicated himself to the pursuit of excellence—in ethics, science, quality, and business. He believed that true success lies in continuous innovation, harmony with the environment, and an unshakable respect for the consumer. For him, quality was not just a standard but a state of mind, rooted in the hearts of people.”

From Humble Beginnings to Global Excellence

The story of illycaffè is one of relentless innovation, beginning with Ernesto Illy’s father, Francesco. Born in 1892 in Timișoara to a German-Hungarian family, Francesco arrived in Trieste with the Austro-Hungarian army, where his work with coffee and chocolate laid the foundation for what would become a global enterprise.

When Ernesto joined the company in 1949, he brought with him a bold vision: to ensure that every city, no matter how small, could serve the perfect cup of illy coffee. By 1956, he had assumed leadership, steering the company toward two defining goals—crafting the finest espresso blend and advancing scientific research. Under his guidance, illycaffè expanded its production, established Italy’s first chemical laboratory for coffee quality control, and began its journey into international markets.

The 1960s and ’70s were a golden age of innovation. The inauguration of illycaffè’s Via Flavia plant introduced groundbreaking technologies, including single-serve coffee pods—revolutionizing espresso preparation worldwide. By the time Ernesto passed the leadership to his children in 2005, illycaffè had become a globally revered brand, synonymous with excellence.

A Man of Science, Passion, and Principle

Beyond his entrepreneurial genius, Ernesto Illy was revered for his ability to distill complex ideas into simple truths. A polyglot and avid sailor, he infused illycaffè with a spirit of curiosity and rigor, forging partnerships with leading institutions and securing numerous patents. His commitment extended beyond the cup—through awards for coffee producers and agronomic research, he elevated entire communities, ensuring sustainability at every step of the supply chain.

The Fondazione Ernesto Illy: Carrying the Torch Forward

Established in 2008, the Fondazione Ernesto Illy stands as a living tribute to his values. Under Anna Illy’s leadership, the Foundation advances scientific research, education, and sustainability initiatives, from agronomy projects like Virtuous Agriculture to the Master in Coffee Economics and Science—empowering future leaders in the coffee world.

As the conference in Trieste demonstrated, Ernesto Illy’s vision remains as vital today as it was a century ago. His was a life dedicated not just to coffee, but to the belief that business, when guided by ethics and innovation, can enrich the world—one perfect cup at a time.
