The countdown to coffee excellence has begun as Julius Meinl, the iconic Viennese coffee roaster, officially launches the 2026 Julius Meinl Barista Cup. Building on the momentum of its inaugural event in 2024, the competition returns with an expanded global footprint, inviting the hospitality professionals who prepare over five million cups of the brand’s coffee daily to compete on the world stage.
From April to July 2026, national competitions will unfold across 17 countries—a significant expansion that includes five new markets. Baristas from Austria, Bosnia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Georgia, Italy, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, the UAE, the USA, Serbia, Germany, Slovenia, China, and Hungary will vie for the chance to represent their nation.
Founded in 1862 and now stewarded by its fifth generation of family leadership, Julius Meinl is one of the world’s oldest coffee roasters. The brand’s presence spans 70 countries, with its coffees served in more than 50,000 hotels, coffee houses, and restaurants.

Christina Meinl, representing the fifth generation of the family, expressed enthusiasm for the competition’s growth. “The inaugural Julius Meinl Barista Cup in 2024 was an incredible moment to celebrate the passion and expertise baristas brought to the competition,” she said. “Their dedication was truly inspiring. We are thrilled to relaunch the Julius Meinl Barista Cup in 2026, welcoming five additional countries and continuing to champion baristas on a global stage.”
National champions will then converge on Vienna, the historic home of the roaster, for the Grand Finale on September 4, 2026.
The competition is designed to honor the technical artistry and passion of baristas working in cafés, restaurants, and hotels that serve Julius Meinl coffee. Selected candidates will be evaluated by a panel of expert judges across three distinct categories: Espresso, Cappuccino, and Signature Drink.
The stakes are high for the top performers. At the Grand Finale, the highest scorer in each category will earn an exclusive trip to a coffee country of origin. The prize offers a rare, immersive opportunity to engage directly with coffee cultivation and sustainable practices at the source.
For the 2026 competition, participants will craft their beverages using the Gloriette Gold blend, part of Julius Meinl’s The Originals Bio Fairtrade double-certified range. Inspired by Vienna’s storied coffee house culture, the blend is tailored for professionals who prioritize premium quality alongside sustainability.
Competitors will utilize SCA-certified Rancilio Specialty RS1 espresso machines and high-precision Fiorenzato grinders. BWT will provide advanced water purification and mineralization technology to guarantee optimal flavor extraction, while DaVinci Gourmet serves as the official syrups partner, enabling baristas to push the boundaries of their signature beverages.
“Collaborating with leading industry brands is a core part of our role as a coffee partner,” said Andreea Postolache, Global Marketing & Sales Director at Julius Meinl Coffee Group. “We take pride in ensuring that baristas are equipped with the tools they need to deliver premium coffee experiences in every cup.”
Applications are now open for baristas working in establishments that serve Julius Meinl coffee, offering them a path to showcase their craft, connect with an international community, and elevate their careers.
