A quiet revolution is brewing in British cafés, offices, and homes. According to new research commissioned by Nespresso Professional, the nation’s coffee habits are undergoing a fundamental shift, with more than one in four Brits (26%) now drinking more decaffeinated coffee than they did a year ago. This move is not about sacrificing taste, but about pursuing it—mindfully and at any hour.
The study of 2,000 UK consumers reveals that flavour is the undisputed driver of this trend. Nearly half (44%) of decaf drinkers prioritize a full-bodied flavour, while 37% seek a smooth, indulgent taste. This quest for a premium experience without caffeine is so pronounced that 47% express a preference for flavoured varieties, sparking popularity for dessert-inspired blends like Nespresso Professional’s recently launched Amaretti Decaffeinato.

Younger consumers and men are at the forefront of this movement, showing a stronger inclination towards these flavourful and indulgent decaf options. Geographically, Greater London leads the nation in its increased consumption, signalling a trend with particular momentum in urban hubs.
In response, Nespresso Professional has cemented its commitment to the category by making the Amaretti Decaffeinato a permanent addition. This blend, crafted from 100% Arabica beans from Colombia and Brazil and decaffeinated with care, offers a smooth coffee with a delicate almond note, inspired by Italy’s iconic amaretti biscuit. It reflects a broader industry recognition that decaf is now a conscious choice for wellbeing and enjoyment, not a compromise.
“We’re seeing a fundamental change in the way people enjoy their coffee,” commented Nick Stevens, B2B Commercial Director for UK & ROI at Nespresso. “Decaf has become a conscious choice rather than a compromise, allowing people to enjoy great coffee from morning to evening.” This sentiment is bolstered by the finding that 41% of UK consumers would pay a premium for high-quality decaf, underscoring a demand for elevated experiences in hotels, restaurants, and workplaces.
The decaf ritual is also becoming an all-day affair. Over half (57%) of decaf drinkers are likely to choose it for iced or cold coffee recipes, particularly in the afternoon, proving that caffeine-free options have seamlessly integrated into the daily flow. This mirrors evolving lifestyles where coffee moments are curated for balance—offering relaxation and enjoyment alongside or in place of an energy boost.
Through its AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program and expanding decaf range, Nespresso Professional aims to meet this nuanced demand. The trend is clear: the future of British coffee is inclusive, flavour-forward, and unbound by the clock, with decaf playing a starring role in the nation’s daily ritual.
