Lavazza Unveils Tablì: The 100% Coffee Tab That Eliminates Capsules, Wrappers, and Compromise

Italian coffee giant brings its biggest innovation in a generation to the US, betting that pure compressed coffee — no plastic, no pod, no coating — can redefine the single-serve category.

Lavazza North America introduced Tablì to the United States, a radical departure from every single-serve coffee format on the market. There is no capsule. There is no individual foil wrapping. There is no plastic coating. Instead, each Tablì is a solid, precisely dosed tab of 100% ground and tamped coffee, held together by proprietary compression technology that lets you see, smell, and feel the coffee before you ever brew it.

Following a successful debut in Italy, the US becomes the first international market for Tablì, a move Lavazza describes as its most ambitious product innovation in over 130 years and the centerpiece of an accelerated North American growth strategy.

“Tablì eliminates the trade-off between quality and convenience entirely — it’s a true multisensory experience: coffee you can smell, feel, and see before it ever brews,” said Daniele Foti, VP of Marketing for Lavazza North America. “And what’s in the cup matches what’s in your hands: the perfect espresso, every single time. But Tablì is more than a product innovation — it’s how we establish Lavazza as a brand that genuinely matters to American coffee drinkers.”

The launch is underpinned by five years of research and development and more than 15 patents. Each tab’s concave shape is engineered to let the coffee expand as it brews, producing what Lavazza calls Crema Plus — a velvety, persistent crema associated with proper espresso, delivered cup after cup without grinding, measuring, or setup.

The accompanying brewing machine, designed in Italy, features a sculpted silhouette and a bean-shaped slider for intuitive, one-touch operation. It will be offered in three finishes — Graphite Black, Sand White, and Walnut Brown — alongside a dedicated milk frother and a tab storage holder, turning the system into a foundation for everything from straight espresso to lattes, cappuccinos, and iced Americanos at home.

At launch, Tablì tabs will be available in five blends: Super Crema, Espresso, Double Espresso, Lungo, and Decaf. Each is precisely dosed and ready to brew, making the ritual of espresso immediate while keeping the coffee itself completely visible and tactile before it enters the machine.

Foti framed the US rollout as a defining moment for the company’s presence in a market it considers among the most dynamic in the world. “The momentum we’ve built here across our different segments is exactly why we’re bringing Tablì here as the first market outside Italy. This is our biggest bet on this market yet, and we intend to shape what comes next.”

Single-serve remains one of the fastest-growing segments in global coffee, yet it has long been dominated by plastic and aluminum capsules that conceal the coffee inside. Tablì is designed to open an entirely new space within that segment — one built for consumers who want to know exactly what’s in their cup: pure coffee, nothing more.

The launch continues a long arc of innovation for the Turin-based company, which pioneered the art of the blend in 1895 and sent the first espresso into outer space in 2015. Still family-owned after four generations, the Lavazza Group today generates turnover of over €3.9 billion and leads markets with brands that include Lavazza, Carte Noire, Merrild, and Kicking Horse. With Tablì, the 130-year-old roaster is betting that the next chapter of coffee at home won’t come wrapped in anything at all.
