At HostMilano, the iconic Viennese coffee roaster Julius Meinl is charting the future of ethical and sustainable coffee service with a groundbreaking addition to its hospitality line. The company is launching industrially compostable professional capsules for its award-winning The Originals Bio Fairtrade range, a move set to redefine sustainable practices for hotels, offices, and restaurants worldwide.
This innovation represents a pivotal step in the brand’s mission to close the loop on coffee capsule waste. The capsule launch will feature the Danube Delight blend, offering a rich, intense flavor where a dark chocolate base meets spicy notes of nutmeg, all while paving the way for a more circular economy.
"This initiative is about shaping the next chapter for coffee," said Lazar Glasnovic, Head of Field Quality at Julius Meinl. "We are moving beyond the traditional 'bean to cup' model to create a sustainable future for capsule-based coffee experiences. Our new capsule delivers exceptional flavor while ensuring a positive environmental legacy."
The commitment extends from the environment to the entire supply chain. The double Bio Fairtrade certification will continue to empower farming cooperatives, guaranteeing a stable minimum price and additional premiums. These funds are directly reinvested by farmers into their communities and sustainability projects, building a more resilient and equitable agricultural future.
The capsules’ environmental promise is rooted in advanced material science. Developed with partners Gualapack and FLO, the capsule body is crafted from C-PLA, a plant-based bioplastic, while the lid uses an innovative paper and cellulose blend. Certified industrially compostable by TÜV AUSTRIA, this design ensures that used capsules will break down efficiently in commercial facilities, returning nutrients to the soil instead of languishing in landfills and generating potent methane gas.
Compatible with Lavazza Blue® systems and containing an increased 11.1 grams of coffee, these capsules are engineered to deliver a consistent, barista-quality experience at the push of a button. With this launch, Julius Meinl is not just introducing a new product but offering the hospitality industry a tangible pathway to a more sustainable and flavorful future.
