In a significant stride for sustainable coffee consumption, the Swedish coffee group Löfbergs has achieved its entire range of whole bean coffees now packaged in a fully recyclable mono-material solution. This transition represents a concrete step towards a circular economy, directly addressing packaging waste challenges within the industry.

The new packaging is constructed from a single type of plastic, a deliberate shift away from traditional multi-layered materials that are difficult to separate and recycle. By simplifying the composition, Löfbergs ensures that the empty bags can be efficiently processed into new materials, closing the loop and reducing environmental impact.

“By using mono-material, we make it easier to recycle our packaging, and we have managed to develop a solution that preserves the quality of the coffee,” explains Madelene Breiling, Head of Development & Compliance at Löfbergs. “This is an important part of our work to create a more sustainable supply chain.”

This initiative is not an isolated effort but a key component of Löfbergs' broader strategic journey. The family-owned company, founded in 1906, has set the goal to transition all its packaging formats to mono-material, thereby strengthening both its environmental credentials and market competitiveness.

As one of the world's largest purchasers of organic and Fairtrade-labeled coffee, Löfbergs has long embedded sustainability into its core operations. The group, which produces an estimated 12 million cups of coffee daily across its brands—Löfbergs, Peter Larsen Kaffe, and Kobbs—serves ten core European markets.

The move to mono-material packaging for its whole beans underscores a practical commitment to the company's ethos. It demonstrates how industry veterans can leverage innovation to meet modern ecological demands, ensuring that the passion for exceptional coffee goes hand-in-hand with responsibility for the planet. For consumers, it means enjoying their daily brew with the added assurance that the package is designed for a sustainable future.
