World Coffee Research Unveils $1.5 Million Plan to Fast-Track Climate-Resilient Coffee Varieties

World Coffee Research (WCR) has launched a $1.5 million project to drag coffee breeding into the genomic age, promising to cut the time needed to develop new, resilient varieties by more than half. The effort comes as record-high coffee prices in 2025 expose a chronic underinvestment in agricultural research that costs the industry up to $405 million annually.
Funded by a grant from the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research (FFAR) and matched by companies including Taylors of Harrogate and Coffee Circle, the project introduces marker-assisted selection to a crop that has largely missed the genetic revolution seen in corn, wheat, and soybeans. Instead of waiting years for coffee trees to mature and show whether they can resist diseases like leaf rust or berry borer, breeders will now peer directly into young plants’ DNA, confirming resistance in a matter of weeks.

“Better coffee starts with better trees,” said WCR CEO Dr. Jennifer “Vern” Long. “This project is about building foundational technology that will benefit our entire sector. We’re providing the industry with the insurance it needs to thrive.”
Traditional coffee breeding is a marathon. Developing a single new variety can take 25 to 30 years of field observations and crossbreeding. By identifying genetic markers linked to disease resistance, the new approach allows selection at the seedling stage, bypassing multiple growing cycles. Importantly, it harnesses natural genetic diversity without genetic modification.
The work is split into three streams. The first focuses on creating genetic marker maps for Arabica’s most devastating threats: coffee leaf rust, coffee berry disease, coffee fruit rot, and coffee berry borer. Together, these pests and diseases cause hundreds of millions of dollars in crop losses each year. The second stream builds a foundational genotyping tool for robusta, the species now accounting for over 40% of global production, using 3,500 genetic markers. A similar Arabica tool, already deployed in WCR’s Innovea Global Coffee Breeding Network, is already shortening timelines and uncovering resistance markers.
The third stream is human: training national breeders from coffee-growing countries to integrate these tools into local programs. Partners in Kenya, Colombia, and Puerto Rico are central to the effort. The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) is advancing molecular tools for coffee berry disease, while Cenicafé in Colombia works on berry borer markers and hosts breeders from around the world for hands-on training. The USDA’s tropical research station in Puerto Rico will screen for leaf rust and anthracnose.
“This drastically reduces the cost and risk of breeding,” said Dr. Tania Humphrey, WCR’s Senior Director of Innovation and the project’s lead investigator. “We can deliver better plants to farmers faster than ever before.”
The initiative addresses an urgent need. Coffee farmers are battling erratic weather, spreading pests, and soil degradation at a time when demand continues to climb. Keith Writer, Supply Director at Taylors of Harrogate, emphasized that the company relies on healthy harvests from many origins: “Bringing coffee breeding into the future is essential for farmers and essential for our entire industry.”
By equipping under-resourced national programs with cutting-edge tools, WCR aims to close coffee’s innovation gap permanently. The message from researchers, funders, and roasters alike is clear: the only way to keep quality coffee on tables worldwide is to build better trees — and to do it fast.
