Des Moines’ coffee culture is about to get a jolt of high-octane energy. Dutch Bros Coffee, the Oregon-born drive-thru juggernaut known for its cult-like following and relentlessly upbeat “broistas,” has officially set its sights on central Iowa. The Tempe, Arizona-based company is making its first foray into the Hawkeye State with not one, but at least three confirmed locations slated to open across the metro.

The expansion marks a significant milestone for the company, which has been rapidly painting the map blue from its origins as a tiny pushcart in Grants Pass, Oregon, in 1992. For local coffee lovers who have encountered the brand while traveling out West, the wait is nearly over.

The first confirmed site will breathe new life into a familiar piece of real estate on Des Moines' south side. Dutch Bros is taking over the former Fazoli’s at 4800 S.E. 14th St., transforming the 986-square-foot building into a streamlined, drive-thru-only coffee shop. This location will serve as the brand’s flagship introduction to Iowans, focusing entirely on the speed and convenience that defines the Dutch Bros experience.

A second, much larger location is already in the pipeline for the bustling Merle Hay Road corridor. Announced in February 2026, this store will feature a double-lane drive-thru designed to handle the notoriously high volume that Dutch Bros locations attract. The configuration will be critical for managing the morning rush of commuters and the afternoon study-break crowds.

The expansion doesn’t stop in Des Moines proper. The suburbs are also getting a taste of the action, with a third store currently in development at 315 N.W. 36th Drive in Ankeny. This move aligns with the company’s aggressive nationwide growth strategy, which aims to nearly double its footprint from 1,147 locations (as of January 27) to over 4,000 shops by 2029.

So, what explains the frenzy? Dutch Bros isn’t trying to be a "third place" living room like Starbucks. Instead, it leans heavily into a fast, high-energy transaction model. Customers are greeted by enthusiastic employees—"broistas"—with blaring pop-punk music and a genuinely personal touch. The company has gamified loyalty through its Dutch Rewards app and fostered a fierce fan-base that calls itself the "Dutch Mafia," built on a culture where baristas often remember names, orders, and even personal life updates.

As the company expands from its new Arizona headquarters (while still maintaining its roasting operations in Grants Pass), the Des Moines metro is poised to become a new stronghold. For local competitors, the arrival of the blue windmill logo signals a new, highly caffeinated battle for the morning drive.
