In a significant mobilization to secure its vital coffee exports, Ethiopia is accelerating a nationwide effort to align with the European Union’s stringent new Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). A recent high-level gathering of government bodies, development partners, and private sector stakeholders has solidified a unified path forward for the sector.

The collaborative push, led by the Ministry of Finance and the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA), underscores a shared commitment to building a resilient and compliant coffee supply chain. The central goal is to safeguard the sector's pivotal role in the national economy while ensuring it meets rising international sustainability standards.

Substantial progress is already being reported, particularly in the development of a robust digital infrastructure for traceability. A unified national platform has been established to track coffee from farm to export, creating a comprehensive map of the supply chain. To streamline this process, a decisive move has been made to centralize all geolocation data collection under ECTA’s management. This initiative is designed to create a single, authoritative source of information, eliminating duplication and simplifying the compliance process for exporters. All data will undergo official validation before being shared with international buyers.

With the EUDR compliance deadline on the horizon, the collective focus is on maintaining momentum. Key agreements have been reached to immediately formalize an EUDR Technical Working Group and to strengthen the institutional capacity of the lead agencies. There is a recognized need to scale up support from all partners, including international development agencies, to ensure the sector not only meets the new requirements but also emerges more competitive in the global market.

The concerted effort reflects a broader optimism about modernizing the iconic coffee industry. By forging a collaborative path and implementing solid systemic foundations, Ethiopia is taking proactive steps to ensure its coffee continues to flow to its largest market, turning a regulatory challenge into an opportunity for long-term strength and sustainability.
