Federal food safety regulators have announced a nationwide recall of specific coffee pods manufactured by New Mexico Pinon Coffee, citing a potential manufacturing defect where ink could transfer to the beverage when brewed with high-temperature machines. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified this voluntary action by the company as a Class III recall, its lowest risk designation, indicating exposure to the product is unlikely to cause adverse health consequences.
The recall, initiated voluntarily by CinFranky LLC (operating as New Mexico Pinon Coffee in Albuquerque, New Mexico) specifically targets 154 units of its "Dark Pinon Single Serve 10-count" coffee pods. Only products bearing the identifier "Product Number: F03308 UPC:812361033081," lot code 251749, and a best-by date of May 8, 2026, are affected. The company emphasized that no other lot codes or products within its line are involved.
According to the FDA notice, the recall stems from a determination that ink on the pods could potentially run during brewing, introducing food coloring into the coffee. While New Mexico Pinon Coffee stated it has received no reports of illness or injury related to this issue, it initiated the recall "out of an abundance of caution," extending the action to the consumer level.
CinFranky LLC began notifying businesses that received the affected pods using multiple methods, including email, fax, letter, telephone, and potential site visits. Consumers in possession of the identified coffee pods are advised by both the company and the FDA to immediately stop using them. They should either discard the product or return it to their place of purchase for a refund.
The FDA's Class III designation underscores its assessment of minimal health risk associated with this particular defect. However, the recall highlights ongoing regulatory oversight concerning food contact safety and manufacturing consistency.
