It is with our deepest sorrow that we inform our coffee community of the passing of Iris Dariela Carvajal Bonilla, 2021 Honduras CoE 2nd place winner. Iris also won 9th place in the 2019 Honduras CoE. Fourth-generation coffee producer, Iris began cultivating coffee eight years ago, managing Plantanares farm located on the slopes of the Congolón National Park. Iris and her team took very good care of the natural resources on the farm; utilizing shade trees, live barriers, properly handling coffee by-products, and more. Described as very energetic and giving her best effort to make world-class quality coffee, Iris always sought after and used the top farming and processing techniques she could.

Along with coffee production, Iris was also studying dentistry and in her final years of dental school. This was halted however, over the past year and a half, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and underwent surgery about a year ago. Iris was also an IWCA Honduras chapter member. A trailblazing female in coffee and the future of Honduras coffee. May her memory live on forever and her spirit continue to inspire us.
